Clinical Psychology - Oakspring Health Clinic

We provide client-tailored psychological therapy to meet a broad spectrum of needs in Bristol and the surrounding area.

These may range from individuals who simply want to make more sense of their feelings, behaviours or relationships to people requesting rehabilitative treatment for chronic health problems such as chronic pain and cancer. Many people’s lives and relationships have been affected by the consequences of health problems or accidents. These effects can include their sleep, their day-to-day activities, their relationships with family, friends or colleagues, their physical activities, their mood etc. As coping with any type of problems can be emotionally and physically draining other issues that we normally keep at bay may come to the forefront. Dr Angela Caney specialises in offering psychological treatments and support for sufferers.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can be used where this is felt appropriate or where this is requested by the client. CBT is now recognised as the most effective treatment for a wide range of psychological and physical problems. In 2001, the Department of Health published evidence-based guidelines outlining the most effective psychological therapies. These recommendations showed that CBT has been found to be the most effective psychological treatment for the following problems:

  • Chronic pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Depression
  • Panic disorder
  • Agoraphobia
  • Social phobia
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders
  • Generalised anxiety disorders

However, other treatment approaches (e.g. systemic, humanistic psychotherapy, solution-focused brief therapy) can be offered in the interest of the client. All treatments will be negotiated with the client in advance.
